  8. Q. How do I get answers to questions about using the new security suite?

    A. Internet Security Suite 2007 is supported by extensive online resources at http://www.ca.com/consumer/support. CA monitors around the clock to defend against the damaging effects of a virus outbreak , and ensures that your Internet Security Suite 2007 software delivers updates as soon as they're available to protect your PC.

  9. Q. How is CA Internet Security Suite 2007 different from other security products?

    A. CA's Internet Security Suite 2007 exploits the company's experience with security. With more than 27 years as a leading provider to the largest organizations in the world, CA has developed the top technology and has world-wide antivirus centers providing daily updates on a 24/7 basis. CA's Internet Security Suite 2007 leverages the expertise while providing a simple to use, low-cost alternative.

  10. Q. What is recommended for online security on a home computer?

    A. Ensure that your computer and the data stored in it is protected from viruses and worms. Prevent virus and worm damage by installing antivirus software. The antivirus program must be kept current. Many people don't realize that antivirus software must be regularly updated with the most recent virus "signatures" to ensure protection against the latest creations from cybervandals. New viruses are launched every month and can spread around the globe in minutes.

Installing firewall protection is the second most important step to secure your personal computer . Without a firewall, your computer is operating with an open-door policy. Personal information, passwords, documents and photos that you don't want to share with the world are at risk to anyone with bad intentions and basic computer skills. Hundreds of Web sites provide simple tools for hackers to find, get in and take what they want from your PC -- some even leave a "back door" so they can turn your computer into a "zombie" and use it to attack other computers. Since a broadband connection is always "on", broadband users , in particular, should install a firewall.

  11. Q. What is a virus?

    A. A computer virus is also known as "malware". Malware is derived from the words "malicious" and "software".

The forms of malware that antivirus programs protect against include the following.

    • Virus - a small program that attaches itself to another program or document and replicates with the potential to cause damage.
    • Worm - code specifically engineered to make extensive use of email to spread rapidly.
    • Trojan - a program that pretends to be something harmless but has a damaging or otherwise malicious intent.
    • Zombie - a program that installs itself on computers and remains dormant until some external event triggers it into action. Consequences could include damage to important files , stealing information and sending it to some predefined email account, or opening up remote control access portals to your PC.
  12. Q. How do antivirus programs work?

    A. Antivirus programs protect by detecting viruses and disabling or removing them from your computer. Detecting viruses is the job of the antivirus "engine", which scans your PC, looking for the tell-tale signatures of malicious programs. Once malicious software has been detected, the antivirus program removes, renames and disables the virus.

  13. Q. Explain how a firewall works.

    A. A firewall monitors all incoming Internet traffic and allows access only by known or trusted traffic. The traffic enters through "ports" on your personal computer. There are more than 65,000 ports available under the Internet Protocol. Manually restricting or granting access to each would be impossible. Firewall software does this by allowing ports that should be open and closing off those that should not. It also makes the computer invisible on the Internet so hackers will have a much harder time finding the PC.

  14. Q. Can a computer virus cause damage?

    A. While harm is the intent, damage varies dramatically. Some of them do a great deal of damage to files. Some can destroy the contents of your hard drives. Others install programs intended to corrupt or steal information from your computer.

  15. Q. Can a hacker cause damage to my computer?

    A. A hacker gaining access to a home PC and its data is a threat to personal privacy. In the worst case, a hacker could lead to identity theft, the fastest growing crime in the United States. Because it's a relatively new crime, people really aren't sure how to prevent it, or how to deal with it once they become a victim. The average identity theft victim spends about $800 on expenses and 175 hours of personal time recovering identities, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center.

  16. Q. Who is Computer Associates (CA)?

    A. Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA) is a leading worldwide provider of solutions and services for the management of IT infrastructure, business information and application development.
