Crescent Beach, mystery revealed

Crescent Beach seems to be a well-kept secret, because many people do not realize that it exists.

“Most people don’t know that Crescent Beach is the old name for this area. On our property deeds, it says Crescent Beach,” said Roy Scafidi of Oceansports World.

The small town successfully fought annexation a couple years ago, and remains in unincorporated Brevard County It is most often referred to as South Cocoa Beach, but the small-town feel of this one-time fishing village stands in stark contrast to its most northern neighbor.

ocean kayak“It [has been] known as an area for people who wanted to do their own thing and not be bothered by rules and regulations of the city,” said Scafidi. “Thus, in turn, you had a more laid-back group of people who enjoy kayaking, surfing, and those activities. These are basically our beaches, not tourists’ beaches.”

These small-town beach areas such as Satellite Beach, Indialantic Beach, and Indian Harbour Beach, dot the route along the coast, often overshadowed by the more well-known beach areas. But, locals know these spots and appreciate their low-key and pedestrian character.
